Foreign direct investment (FDI) is defined as an investment involving management control of a resident entity in one economy by an enterprise resident in another economy. It is a measure of foreign ownership of productive assets, such as factories, mines and land and can be used as one measure of economic globalization. Investment through purchase of listed shares is excluded from the definition of FDI. Inward foreign direct investment is the acquisition of real assets within a country by non-residents. It is viewed as a major stimulus to economic growth in developing countries.
